Eden Foods uses BPA-free cans
It’s best to avoid cans when possible, but I know as well as any how hard that is. A lot of our winter recipes (stew, chili, etc.) require canned tomatoes. I haven’t found a way around it, except to jar my own tomatoes each summer, and I just haven’t been able to do that. For years, I’ve been wanting to find a list of which companies use BPA to line their cans. It appears that the reason there isn’t a list of BPA-free cans is because there aren’t many companies that use them. Sadly, Muir Glen, one of the largest producers of organic canned tomatoes, does use BPA. The only company that appears to use BPA-free cans is Eden Foods. According to them, the cans cost 14% more than the BPA-lined version. See this article on Eden Foods being BPA-free. If you are so motivated, contact the producers of the canned foods you enjoy and tell them that BPA-free cans are important to you. Since it looks like BPA will be around for a while, consumers need to tell manufacturers that they don’t want the chemical in their foods and products.
