One week from today, on Sept 30, a federal law takes place that will require certain foods, like meat and produce, to be labeled with their country of origin. Processed foods will not be labeled. This is a great way for you to know where your food comes and to support more locally grown and raised food. Smaller producers, like restaurants and farmer’s markets, will be exempt. Larger retailers, like supermarkets, will have 6 months to comply with the new law or face a $1000 fine per violation. Look for country of origin labeling on the following foods:
- fresh fruits and vegetables
- frozen fruits and vegetables (things like mixed veggies are exempt)
- raw beef, chicken, lamb, pork, and goat
- fish and shellfish (labeled since 2005)
- raw peanuts, pecans, and macadamia nuts
