My sister is a graduate student in Australia getting a Masters in Public Health with a concentration in International Health and Development. She’s written a paper on how climate change will affect human health. I’ve included a couple highlights and if you want to read more, you can download the document below.
- Over the 20th century, the global average surface temperature has increased by about 0.6°C.
- The global sea level has risen about 35 cm since 1900.
- While US Senator James Inhofe has said global warming is “the greatest hoax ever perpetuated on the American people,” more than 700 peer-reviewed scientific papers conclude that the primary cause of global warming is the human burning of fossil fuels.
- The United States produces about 25% of all of the world’s greenhouse gases and yet only represents 4% of the world’s population.
- The United States has continued to increase its CO2 emissions, the greatest greenhouse gas produced, well above the eight percent increase granted to countries under the Kyoto Protocol.
- The second biggest contributor to greenhouse gases is China, followed by Russia, Japan, and India.
