Most chemicals in cleaning products have never been tested for safety, manufacturers aren’t required to fully disclose ingredients in their products, and research is now beginning to show that traditional cleaning products may be dangerous to your health (see my Green Cleaning post). The best thing you can do for yourself, your family, and the environment is to buy natural cleaning products, but most people don’t seem to be doing that (Americans spent $432 million on all-purpose cleaners last year, but only 1% went to Method and 0.3% went to Seventh Generation, according to Information Resources). We also need to encourage major companies to change their ways.
The organizations Women’s Voices for the Earth and Co-op America have joined together to demand that Procter & Gamble, Clorox Co., S.C. Johnson & Son, Sunshine Makers Inc., and the manufacturers of Lysol and Resolve (Reckitt-Benckiser) make their cleaning products safer. They want these companies to replace the suspected toxins in their formulas with safer, greener alternatives. They also want the companies to list their ingredients on the bottles so consumers can make informed decisions. Please take a minute to sign the petition!
