Weight update

My baby turned 5 months old yesterday and this past week I finally hit my pre-pregnancy weight thanks to some of my efforts I previously mentioned.  I also wanted to add one other great weight loss suggestion–not eating late at night.  I’ve always been a nighttime snacker.  I love going to bed on a full [...]

Earth hour

Earth Hour is this Saturday!
March 29, 2008, 8-9pmLast March, more than 2.2 million people and 2,100 businesses in Sydney, Australia turned off the lights for one hour to inspire others to take action against climate change. This massive, collective effort – called Earth Hour – reduced Sydney’s energy consumption by 10.2% for one hour, [...]

DHA-enhanced soy milk

In our house, we don’t drink cow’s milk. It started when we discovered that dairy products, even organic ones, caused my husband to “break out.” He gets what looks like acne on his face whenever he consumes moderate amounts of dairy. When we first discovered this, it was pretty remarkable. If [...]

Whole wheat banana nut pancakes

Here is one of our favorite breakfasts:

1/2 cup whole wheat flour
1/2 cup all-purpose flour (or use all whole wheat)
2 tsp brown sugar
1 tsp baking powder

1 cup buttermilk (we use soymilk)
1 tbsp canola oil
1/2 tsp vanilla
2 bananas, sliced
1/3 cup chopped walnuts

In large bowl, combine dry ingredients. Make well in center. In small bowl, [...]

Low sugar desserts

Everyone deserves some dessert once in a while, but most are very high in sugar.  If you’re looking for something to satisfy your sweet tooth, consider So Delicious soy ice cream.  I’ve loved this stuff for a while now and while it tastes just as sweet as regular ice cream, the Chocolate Velvet only has [...]

Demand safe cleaning products

Most chemicals in cleaning products have never been tested for safety, manufacturers aren’t required to fully disclose ingredients in their products, and research is now beginning to show that traditional cleaning products may be dangerous to your health (see my Green Cleaning post). The best thing you can do for yourself, your family, and [...]

Bye bye bulge

With summer just around the corner and the last few pounds of baby weight lingering around my waist, I’ve been thinking a lot lately about the best way to get back to my pre-pregnancy weight. There are a lot of ways out there to loose weight and I’m not a fan of many of [...]

Prescription drugs in our water

A scary report out today says that traces of various pharmaceutical drugs, including antibiotics, have been found in the drinking water of 24 major metropolitan areas.  The report says that the chlorine added to our water could make these drugs more toxic, that the drugs could be more dangerous than other pollutants because they are [...]

The Business of Being Born

There’s a great documentary that was just released about birth in America–The Business of Being Born. After having a birth with many medical interventions, Ricki Lake decided to have her second child at home. She hosts this documentary about birth. It is awesome! I loved it, especially the first 2/3 [...]

Water bottles leach BPA at room temp

It’s known that bisphenol-A (BPA) leaches from certain plastics under extreme temperatures, but new research shows that it leaks at room temp as well.  All the more reason to stop using polycarbonate!
